Frequently asked questions
How do I know if it’s the right time to have surgery?
Talk to your surgeon. Three important questions to ask include:
- Could surgery ease my pain or get rid of it?
- How could this procedure improve how my body works, and will it change my daily life afterward?
- Could surgery help prevent my condition from getting worse?
What is a general surgeon?
General surgeons are experts in the repair and reconstruction of wounds, bones, muscles, and organs in the body. When possible, they use minimally invasive techniques, to help shorten recovery times and reduce the risk of complications.
Where will the surgery be performed?
Your surgery may take place at one of our hospitals or the UAB Medicine St. Vincent’s One Nineteen Outpatient Surgery Center. Outpatient procedures are same-day surgeries that usually do not require an overnight hospital stay.
Will my doctor communicate with my family during my surgery?
Your designated health care representative (such as a family member or friend) will be updated by your care team. Once your procedure is complete, your surgeon will provide a verbal update on your condition.
How will my family or caregiver know what to do after surgery?
When you are ready to go home after surgery, your care team talks with you and your health care representative about the specific care you will need at home. We also provide a discharge plan with home instructions and explain it to your health care representative. We help you and your health care representative understand your pain management, wound care, and dietary needs, to help make your recovery as comfortable and safe as possible.
