The doctors and athletic trainers at UAB St. Vincent’s provide personalized care for sports injuries. If an injury or illness is keeping you from your favorite activities, we’re here for you –from your first visit, throughout recovery, and during your return to play. Our whole-body approach to care includes support for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Specialty care
Sports and activity-related injuries can happen suddenly or develop over time due to overuse or harmful movement patterns. They may also be due to individual or environmental factors.
Our sports medicine care team specializes in evaluating, treating, and helping prevent these injuries. We provide team-based care for a wide range of sports and activity-related conditions, including:
- Acute bone, muscle, and ligament injuries
- Concussion
- Female athlete triad
- Overuse injuries
- Exercise-induced asthma
- Weather-related illness, due to exercise in extreme heat or cold
Who we treat
We treat competitive athletes and active people of all ages who enjoy exercise and recreational activities. Our care team includes fellowship-trained primary care and orthopaedic sports medicine doctors, along with athletic trainers. We provide complete services, including urgent injury care, surgical and non-surgical treatments, and rehabilitation therapy.
Our orthopaedic surgeons are experts in complex injuries, and they often use minimally invasive surgical techniques that require only a few small incisions (cuts). Our sports medicine doctors and athletic trainers also provide event medicine services and emergency care for injuries at team practices, competitions, and other community events.
No matter your level of competition, it’s important to us that you get back to doing what you love.
When to see a sports medicine doctor
You don’t have to be an athlete to schedule an appointment with our sports medicine care team for yourself or your family. We provide personalized treatment plans that reflect your unique physical abilities and performance goals. Our goal is to get you back to your chosen activity as quickly and safely as possible.
If an injury is severe and requires immediate attention – such as a bone fracture or tendon tear – our Emergency Department can provide an initial evaluation and connect you with our network of orthopaedic surgeons and other specialists for expert care.
If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please visit the nearest emergency room immediately or call 911.
