Donor support funds purchase of new CT simulator at Bruno Cancer Center

Earlier this year, the UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham Bruno Cancer Center became the first facility in Alabama to install the latest computed tomography (CT) simulator for radiation treatment, marking a major step forward in precision cancer care for the state.

This advanced CT simulator offers several cutting-edge features that improve diagnostic accuracy and enhance the patient experience. One of the most impactful upgrades is its iterative metal artifact reduction (IMAR) capability, which significantly improves image clarity for patients with metal prostheses or dental fillings – which historically have been a challenge in CT imaging. The system also allows multiple scans to be combined, enabling oncologists to precisely track tumor growth or shrinkage over time by overlaying past and current images.

The new simulator also allows for dynamic scanning – capturing images as the patient moves into or out of the scanner – which speeds up the process and improves image contrast. With the addition of ultra-small detectors, the system can reconstruct images at various slice thicknesses without requiring the patient to undergo another scan.

The purchase of the new CT simulator was made possible by Sandy and Ted Berglund, Anne and Benny LaRussa Sr., and Debbie and Jim Wadsworth. To honor the philanthropic generosity that made this technology possible, the UAB St. Vincent’s Foundation hosted an appreciation luncheon in April for the donors. They were treated to a private tour of the radiation oncology suite and learned firsthand how their gifts already are benefiting patients through faster, more accurate, and more personalized care.

Their support has made a lasting impact on cancer treatment in Alabama, setting a new standard for excellence in imaging and patient care at the Bruno Cancer Center.
