The UAB St. Vincent’s East–Inpatient Rehabilitation Center is staffed by specialists trained in advanced rehabilitation who help patients recover after a serious illness, injury, or procedure.
Our team provides complete and personalized rehabilitation for conditions such as:
- Stroke
- Brain injury
- Spinal cord dysfunction or injury
- Amputation and limb impairment
- Orthopaedic injuries, hip fractures, or post-surgical repair
- Neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain-Barre’ syndrome (GBS), and Parkinson’s disease
- Other neuro-muscular disorders and medically disabling conditions such as pulmonary disease and dysfunction; renal failure or post-surgery rehab may also qualify
The UAB St. Vincent’s East–Inpatient Rehabilitation Center is accredited by The Joint Commission and has provided service since 1985.
Complete rehabilitation care
Your care plan is led by rehabilitation doctors who understand your unique challenges and goals. Consultations, diagnostic tests, and medical procedures are available onsite.
During your stay, you will benefit from:
- One-on-one therapy sessions, as part of an individualized treatment plan
- Care that addresses all of your needs, including psychosocial and physical needs; patient and family education; and discharge planning
- Opportunities for meaningful community re-entry therapy sessions
- All-private rooms to relax and connect with your guests
We offer the following rehabilitation services as part of our complete care:
Physical therapy
- Intensive gait program
- Vestibular, balance, and dizziness rehabilitation
- Neurologic rehabilitation for conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease
Occupational therapy
- Vision therapy
- Custom splint fabrication

Our rehabilitation specialists
Our care teams work to improve your emotional and physical health, and they involve your family or caregiver team as needed. Your team may include:
- Medical director, a doctor trained in rehabilitation who will coordinate your overall treatment program and oversee your care team
- Rehabilitation nurses, who provide round-the-clock nursing care and can help answer questions you and your family may have
- Physical therapists, who teach you exercises to improve your balance, strength, and mobility. They also may help you learn how to use walkers and canes, braces, artificial limbs, or other mobility devices.
- Occupational therapists, who focus on improving your everyday living skills such bathing, dressing, grooming, and eating. They also may train you to use equipment that can help you perform these activities better.
- Speech therapists, whowork to improve your ability to communicate, problem-solve and reason, and address any problems with swallowing
- Case managers, who explain the details of your stay and discuss any lifestyle changes you can expect. They work with your insurance company to certify your ongoing rehabilitation and coordinate your discharge needs.
Your rehabilitation care team may also include a dietitian, pharmacist, respiratory therapist, and other specialty physicians. Your specialists will continue following your progress and remain in charge of your medical care.
