UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham-Emergency is a Level III Trauma Center that provides 24/7 emergency care for severe illness and injury.
Our emergency room (ER) team includes cardiovascular, surgical, neurology, stroke, and orthopaedic specialists, and they help provide care for conditions such as heart attack, stroke, concussion, broken bones, and much more. We connect you to any follow-up care you may need before you leave the ER.
Our emergency care includes:
- 24/7 service
- Admission to UAB St. Vincent’s–Birmingham hospital, when needed
- Board-certified emergency care doctors and ER nurses
- On-call specialists
- On-site full-service digital imaging (X-ray, CT scan, and ultrasound)
- On-site lab services
- Private treatment rooms
When to seek emergency care
Call 911 or go directly to the nearest ER if you or a family member is experiencing:
- Abdominal pain (moderate to severe)
- Back pain (severe)
- Chest pain
- Coughing up or vomiting blood
- Major trauma
- Pregnancy labor pains
- Severe allergic reactions
- Severe burns
- Shortness of breath
- Severe skin infections or complicated abscesses
- Sudden neurologic changes like weakness, difficulty speaking, numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of consciousness
Follow-up care
Your care doesn’t stop when you leave the ER. We provide follow-up care to support your recovery. Your care team also helps you manage your medications and sends prescriptions to your local pharmacy or to our own pharmacy.
If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, go directly to the nearest ER or dial 911. Signs or symptoms of a possible acute emergency include shortness of breath, chest pain, open fracture, fainting, severe bleeding, head injury or other major trauma, weakness or numbness on one side, loss of consciousness or fainting, severe abdominal pain, and bites or stings.
