In 2020, UAB and Ascension St. Vincent’s formed an alliance to increase Alabamians’ access to high-quality, innovative medical care and help patients receive the right care at the right time and place. When Ascension decided to sell its Alabama facilities, UAB Health System decided that purchasing them was the natural next step in strengthening sustainable care in Alabama.
The purchase includes all of the St. Vincent’s hospitals in central Alabama, including Birmingham, Blount, Chilton, East, and St. Clair, as well as the One Nineteen Campus. It also includes the Trussville Freestanding Emergency Department and multiple clinics and imaging centers.
Yes. You will continue to see your current doctor or provider and should experience no changes in your care or care team.
UAB Health System plans to continue operating St. Vincent’s facilities with the same outstanding caregivers and associates who currently serve these communities. So, you can keep your appointments with your St. Vincent’s doctors.
There are no changes planned for upcoming procedures. Your provider will continue to consult with you about your care, including planned procedures or treatments.

Insurance plans vary, so patients should direct this question to their provider and/or insurance company. UAB Health System will focus on maintaining and expanding access for all patients at all facilities.
UAB Health System recently announced plans to transition to a new electronic health record platform, EPIC, for electronic medical records, revenue cycle and clinical research functions. This system will be integrated across UAB Health System entities — including UAB St. Vincent’s — and will streamline processes for care providers, administrators and support staff and allow patients’ medical records to follow them seamlessly. Full implementation of the platform is expected to be completed in phases in less than two and a half years.
