SUMMARY:UAB St. Vincent’s East Bariatric Surgery Pre Operative Nutrition and Surgery Prep Class
DESCRIPTION:UAB St. Vincent’s East Bariatric Surgery Pre Operative Nutrition and Surgery Prep Class \nThis class is designed to help you feel confident\, informed\, and fully prepared for bariatric surgery. We’ll walk through essential pre-operative and post-operative nutrition\, lifestyle changes\, goals and practical strategies to support a safe surgery and smoother recovery. You’ll learn what to eat\, how to prepare your body\, what to expect long term after surgery\, and how to set realistic habits that support long-term success. This class is required for all patients undergoing bariatric surgery at UAB St. Vincent’s East. Your support person(s) are invited and encouraged to attend with you. \nThis class is offered hybrid. We offer in person attendance in the bariatric center along with real time virtual attendance via zoom. Please note that Eastern Surgical (Dr. Hughes and Dr. Dubois) do require their patients to attend IN PERSON only. BMI (Dr. Long) patients have the option of attending either virtually or in person.  \n\n\nClass Cost is $50.00 and must be paid at the time of registration via credit card/debit card. The cost is not covered by insurance. Class fees are set and apply to all patients\, and the program nor surgeon’s office is unable to waive these fees. The program does not accept cash or checks for payment.  \nIf you require interpreter services for class\, please notify arothe@uabmc.edu at least 7 days prior to your class date. Please call 205-838-6299 or email arothe@uabmc.edu with questions about class.  \nVery important pre-class instructions will be attached to the confirmation email you receive on registration. If you do not receive a confirmation email within 24 hours of registering\, please email arothe@uabmc.edu.  \nCancellations and Rescheduling and Late Entry:  A refund will be given if a cancellation request is received 1 business day (24 hours) prior to the start of the class. If the patient does not attend class with no prior notice a refund will not be given\, but a coupon code will be given to attend a future class.  A full refund will be given for any class cancelled by the site. By registering for this class\, you hereby express written agreement to this policy. If you need to reschedule\, please call 205-930-6299 so a coupon code can be given to you so you can utilize your payment to reschedule. Please note that late entry into class is not allowed. If you log on more than 10 minutes late for class\, you will be asked to reschedule so as to not provide distraction to other patients and instructors. DESCRIPTION:Journey To Fit Bariatric Support Group is a welcoming\, judgment-free community for individuals at any stage of their bariatric journey—whether you’re preparing for surgery\, newly post-op\, or years out and focused on long-term success. We understand that bariatric surgery is more than a physical transformation; it’s an emotional\, mental\, and lifestyle journey too. Our group offers encouragement\, education\, and real-life support from people who truly get it. Through shared experiences\, honest conversations\, and practical tools\, members gain confidence\, accountability\, and motivation to build sustainable habits and a healthier relationship with food\, movement\, and self-care. At Journey To Fit\, you’re never alone. We celebrate progress over perfection\, focus on whole-person wellness\, and walk this journey together. \nThere is no cost to attend and support groups are held one a month on Saturday. To make support accessible for everyone\, attendees can choose to attend sessions on site at the UAB St. Vincent’s East bariatric center or join virtually. \nAll support groups are held on Saturdays from 12:00pm-1:00pm (central) \nIn person address and virtual log on information to be sent after completion of RSVP

SUMMARY:UAB St. Vincent's East Bariatric Surgery Program RECHARGE Class
DESCRIPTION:RECHARGE is specialized education for bariatric surgery patients greater than 1 year post surgery who may be experiencing nutritional issues\, plateau\, weight recurrence or even just need follow-up\, guidance and answers to questions on long term life after surgery. This course was created to address the need for continual education and follow up for long term patients after surgery as we move past the first-year.  \n\nThe class is held virtually and is facilitated by Aimee Rothe BSN\, RN\, CEN\, CBN\, TCRN\, NHDP-BC\, AFAA-Board Certified Fitness Instructor and Bariatric Surgery Program Director at UAB St. Vincent’s East. Aimee is a post operative bariatric surgery patient herself and views the post operative lifestyle not just as a healthcare provider who specializes in bariatrics but also as a patient herself. Our specialized Bariatric Dietitian Claire Nesbitt RD\, LD also facilitates the course. \n\nInitial Class: The initial virtual classroom portion of the course is taught over a 4-hour time frame.  It covers different topics associated with issues long term patients may be facing and involves open discussion and conversation with others who may be sharing the same issues as you. Some of the things covered in the course include: The “why” behind regain and plateau\, what life looks like as a long-term patient\, Macronutrients and Nutrition\, Meeting Non-Hunger Needs\, The Brain side of Nutrition\, Vitamins\, Exercise for long term success\, Habit Changes\, Portion Control\, Meal Prep.  \nThe class fee is $25.00 which covers all course materials and your 3 1:1 follow up appointments (virtual or in person) with the registered dietitian after completion of class.
