Women’s Services

The obstetricians/gynecologists (OB/GYNs) at UAB St. Vincent’s provide personalized medical and surgical care for all women’s health needs, including screenings, pelvic health, pregnancy care, and care related to menopause.

Gynecologic care

As part of a women’s health team, our gynecologic doctors serve patients throughout their lifetime, making sure to address any new symptoms and health concerns at every appointment. They work closely with other specialists as needed, including primary care, heart care, and pediatric providers. They help patients understand risk factors and provide or connect them with screenings for early detection of breast and gynecologic cancers.

Gynecologists help screen for, diagnose, and treat many women’s health conditions, such as:

Gynecologic surgery

Gynecologic surgery is a treatment option for many conditions affecting the uterus, ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes, and vagina. If surgery has been recommended as part of your care plan, your doctor will always discuss the options and risks before proceeding.

Some gynecologists also perform gynecologic surgery. Whenever possible, our surgeons will recommend minimally invasive techniques and robotic surgery. Compared with traditional surgery, minimally invasive techniques often mean smaller and fewer incisions (cuts), less pain, a lower risk of complications, and a faster recovery.

If your surgery may impact your ability to have children (a hysterectomy, for example), your doctor will discuss your options and priorities with you and develop a care plan that is right for you.

Maternity care

Our obstetricians provide fertility evaluations, family planning consultations, pregnancy testing, and prenatal care. They strive to create a birthing experience that protects the mother’s health while honoring her preferences, and they support patients throughout labor, delivery, and beyond.

The maternity care and related services we offer include:

  • Breastfeeding support
  • High-risk pregnancy care
  • Intensive care for newborns
  • Pregnancy and birthing centers
  • Postpartum care

If your pregnancy is high-risk, our specialists and care teams work together closely to provide the care you need. This includes maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists and other doctors with advanced training in complex pregnancies. We have high-risk pregnancy services onsite, including a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) that is equipped to respond to any situation that may arise.

Screenings and preventive care

During yearly exams, our gynecologists talk to patients about their health history, risk factors, and preventive health care. They also provide pelvic exams and screenings such as breast exams, lab tests, and Pap smears for early detection of potential cancer and other conditions.

If you are diagnosed with a condition and need more advanced care, your gynecologist will work closely with other specialists, such as urologists and endocrinologists. No matter how complex the condition, your gynecologist will help ensure that you receive the proper treatment.
